Book a Room Near Graz’s Best Tourist Attractions

Graz is the second largest city in Austria, after Vienna, and therefore, it has a special place in the culture and history of the country.

Graz is ideal for those favouring Oceanic climate to live or spend time in. It has mild summers and cool winters, and the Alps shields westerly winds that can influence the weather in Graz.

The city centre, Altstadt, is one of the most well-preserved historical city centres in the world, and in 1999 achieved UNESCO’s World Heritage Site status.

There are many sites to visit if you are at the city centre, and even in the greater Graz area. Here is the list of some of the places to visit in Graz.

Eggenberg Palace (Schloss Eggenberg)

Completed in the 17th Century as a residence for Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, Schloss Eggenberg is a large-scale artwork in the heart of Graz. It is the artistic creation of the Italian master architect, Giovanni Pietro de Pomis, who was commissioned to design this architectural masterpiece and Baroque structure. The building contains 24 state rooms that are furnished with decorations, paintings and furniture of the 17th and 18th Century.

As the palace was constructed on top of an older structure dating back to the medieval times, some gothic parts still remain including the Gothic Chapel, which was built in 1470, and is a must-see for all lovers of medieval architecture.

The gardens surrounding the palace also create a fabulous landscape and are worth a visit. One of the most famous ones is the planetary garden, which was designed at the start of the 21th century with the idea of incorporating the history of the palace into its surroundings.

Castle Hill (Schlossberg)

Schlossberg, a hill located at the centre of Graz, was formerly a fortress to keep away the enemy. It is now a public park and is considered one of the main attractions of the city for its clock tower, amazing view and all the entertaining things you can do there.

Among the most interesting things to do on Schlossberg are:

  •         Ride on The Schloßbergbahn, or the Castle Mountain Railway, and enjoy a panoramic view of Graz, through its glass roof.
  •         Take the Schloßberg slide, the highest underground slide in the world, and have a lot of thrilling fun. The slide is directly at the Uhturm, or the clock tower, and you can use the elevator or the stairs to reach it.
  •         Have a delightful meal at Schlossberg Restaurant, and try a diverse range of cuisines, or use the self-service provided in the beer garden.

Kunsthaus Graz (Graz Art Museum)

Graz Art Museum is a great representative for contemporary art in Graz, and the building of the museum itself is an important architectural landmark.

The architecture of the building gathers lots of visitors, being famous for its unique design which contrasts its surroundings perfectly. It was designed by Peter Cook, and Colin Fournier, who called the place a ‘Friendly Alien’, and is a great example of blob style in architecture.

The museum is home to specific exhibitions that are held each year, representing all forms of modern art, and also hosts both temporary and permanent projects by various artists. A great example for permanent projects is Oliver Klimpel’s Objects and Interventions.

Graz Opera (Oper Graz)

Graz Opera was opened in 1899, and has seen amazing performances of plays such as Schiller’s William Tell. In this Opera House, you can see some of the most spectacular operas and ballets. As a cultural centre, it is also a great place for excursions. So, you can check the beauties of the interior, with its terrace, overseeing a beautiful view of the city, or its spectacular red carpet.

The building itself is an example of a neo-baroque style, created by Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer. The exterior and interior shapes and designs such as the ones on the auditorium ceiling and main stairs are a wonder to behold, and certainly worth a visit.

Transportation in Graz

Graz has some of the best means of public transport, with a bus and tram system that runs from 5 am to midnight. The city has 6 tram lines and 24 bus lines that make it easy to navigate without a car.

Getting around by bicycle is also very common in Graz since the city is rather small and compact, with several streets with bicycle lanes available.

To get out of Graz, Graz Hauptbahnhof, is the main railway station that connects Graz to other cities in Austria. There are also direct routes to Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Zagreb.

Graz Airport is also available for travelling by air with destinations outside Austria, such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Zurich.
